What is a Puff Stitch Border?

First thing first, what is a puff stitch border? A puff stitch border is made up of puff stitches. A puff stitch to put it simply is a stitch that uses a lot of yarn overs. The more yarn overs you have on your hook when making this stitch, the bigger your puff stitch will be.

You can have a puff stitch border with just one row of puff stitches, or you can add a couple of puff stitches to one stitch to create a double or triple effect. I am going to be showing you how to make a simple 1-row puff stitch border.

Here are some of the materials that I used in this step-by-step tutorial, as well as the stitch I used for the swatch that you will see in the photos.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Yarn – I am using Scheepjes Catona yarn for this tutorial.
  • Hook – I am using a 4.00 mm (F) crochet hook for this tutorial.
  • Scissors – To cut your yarn.
  • Darning Needle – To work in your ends.
  • Practice Swatch – You can either make a practice swatch or crochet the border directly onto your project. I used a practice swatch for this tutorial and the stitch that I used to make the swatch is single crochet.

Stitches You’ll Need to Know:

  • Chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook.
  • Slip Stitch: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
  • Half Double Crochet: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over, and pull through stitch. Yarn over one more time and pull through the last three loops on the hook.
  • Puff Stitch: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop.  Then yarn over again and insert hook into the same stitch and pull up another loop ( 5 loops on hook).  Yarn over again, insert hook into the same space and pull up another loop.  (7 loops on hook).  Yarn over and pull through all 7 loops. Yarn over once more to close the puff stitch.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Puff Stitch Border

Step 1: Insert your hook into the last stitch of your last row, and chain 2

If you’re using a different color, reattach your yarn to the last stitch of your last row, and chain 2.

Step 1 shows to chain 2 for the border.

Step 2: Skip one stitch, and make a half double crochet in the next stitch.

Step 2 shows to make a half double crochet.

Step 3: Then yarn over, and work your hook around the half double crochet post/stitch (3 loops on hook). Continue to repeat that step from the beginning 2 more times. Then yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on hook. You have now made a puff stitch.

Note: When making the puff stitch, you will first have 3 loops on your hook, then 5 loops, and you’ll finish of by having 7 loops on your hook.

Step 3 is to make a half double crochet.

Step 4: Continue to repeat step 2 and 3 across the row until you reach your corner. Then make another puff stitch and chain 1.

Step 4 shows how to make a puff stitch in the corner with a chain 1.

Now continue to repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 all the way around your work.

Step 5: Once you have finished working your border around your project, slip stitch to the top of the chain 2 you made in the beginning. You can also slip stitch in the following stitch. You’re finished!
