What is a Treble Crochet Border?

To put it simply a treble crochet border is a border made up of treble crochet stitches. A treble crochet is a long stitch that is great to use when you want to add height to a project.

For example, let’s say you’ve just made a crochet blanket or crochet shrug and want it to be longer, a treble crochet border would be the perfect thing to add to your project. Not only does it create a lot of height, it’s also easy to make.

So this border is a great one to know and add to your crochet stitch library.

Alright, so here are some of the materials that I used in this step-by-step tutorial, as well as the stitch I used for the swatch that you’ll see in the photos.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Yarn – I used WeCrochet Dishie cotton yarn in the color Swan and Inlet.
  • Hook – I am using a 4.00 mm (F) crochet hook for this tutorial.
  • Scissors – To cut your yarn.
  • Darning Needle – To work in your ends.
  • Practice Swatch or Current Project – I made a basic 4″ by 4″ inch swatch using the suzette stitch and my favorite cotton yarn by WeCrochet.

Stitches You’ll Need to Know:

  • Chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook.
  • Slip Stitch: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch and loop on hook.
  • Treble Crochet Stitch: Yarn over twice, insert hook into stitch. Yarn over and draw yarn through, pulling up a loop. Yarn over again and pull yarn through the first two loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull yarn through the next two loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull yarn through the last two loops on the hook.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Treble Crochet Border:

Step 1: Insert your hook into the last stitch of your last row, and make a treble crochet.

If you’re using a different color, reattach your yarn to the last stitch of your last row, chain 4, and make a treble crochet in the same stitch you attached your yarn to (you want 2 treble crochets in the corner stitch).

The first step in making a treble crochet border.
Step 2 is to make another treble crochet in the corner stitch.

Step 2: Then continue to make 1 treble crochet in each stitch across the row until your very last stitch.

Step 3 is to make a treble crochet in each stitch.

Step 3: Then make 2 treble crochet, 2 chain, and 2 treble crochet in the corner stitch.

Note – if you find that your corner is rounding or looks tight, add an extra treble crochet stitch.

Step 3 shows how to work the corner stitches.

Step 4: Then continue making a treble crochet in each stitch on the side of your crochet project.

Now continue to repeat this sequence all the way around your crochet project. Once you have finished your border, slip stitch to the first stitch.

And that’s it, you’re finished!
