Free Crochet Washcloth Pattern

My latest free crochet pattern is a simple little washcloth. I love making washcloths in between bigger projects because sometimes you just need some instant gratification. I was also in need of some, so it worked out perfectly!

So if you’re in need of some too or want to make something easy, this might be the perfect pattern for you as well. This crochet washcloth pattern is a beginner-level pattern that uses basic crochet stitches.

It also has two border options, you can either make a crab stitch border or you can make a picot edge border. You can also leave the border out, it’s totally up to you!

Down below you’ll find a quick list of things you’ll need for this crochet pattern.

What do you need to crochet a washcloth?

One great thing about crocheting a washcloth is that it only requires a few things. Here are the supplies that you’ll use to crochet a washcloth.

  • Some cotton yarn. I highly recommend sticking to cotton yarn or other natural fiber yarn for this pattern.
  • A crochet hook. In the pattern, you’ll use a 4.0 mm crochet hook.
  • A darning needle. You’ll need a basic darning needle to work in your tail ends.
  • A pair of scissors. You’ll need a pair of scissors to cut the yarn.

How to make a different size crochet washcloth?

If you would like to change the size of your crochet washcloth all you have to do is follow the multiple of the stitch used in the pattern. For this crochet washcloth pattern, you’re using the suzette stitch, which is made using a multiple of 2.

So you can make the washcloth smaller or bigger by making your foundation chain an even number. If you need some help making this stitch, make sure to take a look at the photo and guided video tutorial for the suzette stitch here.

How to crochet a border on a washcloth?

For this crochet washcloth pattern, you have two different options for borders. The first washcloth in the picture down below is the crab stitch border and the second washcloth has the picot stitch border.

To add your border to your washcloth, all you have to do is reattach your yarn to the washcloth and crochet within each stitch. The stitches on the side are not as pronounced, so you’ll want to place a stitch within each row. This keeps it nice and neat.

Once you have finished working your stitches around the washcloth, you then want to slip stitch to the first stitch to finish off your work.

  • Ch 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
  • The washcloth can be made with a border or without a border. Both options are explained in the pattern. The crab stitch border is made by making a reverse single crochet. So instead of working right to left. You will be working left to right. The picot stitch border is worked as normal, right to left.
  • The washcloth is made in the color Swan and the border is made in the color Inlet.
  • Total stitches for row are indicated between ( ).

Pattern

With WeCrochet Dishie color Swan, chain 36.

Row 1: In second ch from hook, make (1sc,1dc) in same chain. Skip next ch, *(1sc,1dc) in next ch, skip 1 ch. Repeat from * till last two ch. skip next ch, sc in last ch. Turn. (35)

Row 2: ch 1, (1sc, 1dc) in first stitch, skip next st. *(1sc,1dc) in following st, skip next st. Repeat from * till last two st. skip next st, sc in last st. Turn. (35)

Row 3 – Row 26: Repeat row 2. (35)

Finish off and work in tail ends.

Now follow the directions down below for either the Crab Stitch Border or the Picot Edge Border.

Crab Stitch Border

Reattach the second color (WeCrochet Dishie color Inlet) to the last stitch of your last row and chain 1.

Insert your hook back into the last stitch, *yarn over, pull through (2 loops left on hook), yarn over, and pull through last 2 loops. Insert your hook into the next stitch and repeat the sequence from * in each stitch around the washcloth.

Once you have finished your last stitch, slip stitch to the first stitch.

Finish off and work in tail ends.

(note – you’re working left to right. To see a step-by-step photo tutorial of the crab stitch, click here.)

Picot Edge Border

Reattach the second color (WeCrochet Dishie color Inlet) to the last stitch of your last row and chain 1. Then make 1 single crochet in that same stitch and make 1 single crochet in the following stitch. Chain 3 and make a slip stitch in the top front loop of your single crochet stitch.

Now you will repeat that sequence all the way around your washcloth. So you will make 2 single crochets, chain 3, and slip stitch to the top front loop of your single crochet stitch.

Once you have made your last stitch (single crochet), you’ll want to work one more single crochet in the first stitch where you added your new color. Chain 3 and slip stitch to the top front loop of your single crochet stitch, then slip stitch to the following stitch to finish your work.

Then work in your remaining tail ends.

Hi there, all you have to do is work in your remaining yarn ends. So you want to cut your yarn when you've made the last stitch, tie a knot, and work your remaining yarn within the stitch.
