Free Striped Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern
Cozy and colorful, the Coastal Baby Blanket is a striped crochet baby blanket made using a simple one-row repeat. If you love relaxing, repetitive patterns and watching your colors come together row by row, I think you’re going to really enjoy making this blanket.
It’s an easy beginner level crochet pattern that uses three different yarn colors (blue, beige, and white) and is made with one of my favorite stitches, the reverse blanket stitch.
I've used this stitch for lots of different projects and it still amazes me how this stitch comes together so effortlessly. It's one of those stitches that looks hard to recreate, but is actually really simple to make.

So simple to make that I've made several different projects using this stitch. All of which can be found here on the blog (like the Haven Blanket, the Willow Blanket, or this Cozy Cotton Throw).

So let's dive a little deeper into the stitches you'll use and the yarn that you'll be using for this pattern.
The Stitches That You'll Use for This Baby Blanket Pattern
The Coastal Baby Blanket Pattern is made using three basic stitches. You'll start this pattern by first making your foundation chain, then you'll start working your first row of chains, single crochets, and double crochets.
So these are the three stitches that you'll need to know for the pattern. Down below, you'll find a quick overview of how to work these stitches.
Stitches
- ch – chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook.
- sc – single crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
- dc – double crochet: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch and pull through, yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
Once you've made your first row and second row, the pattern becomes very simple because you're just going to repeat row 2.
So you're going to be repeating the same sequence of making two double crochets, two chains, and one single crochet throughout the pattern.
And then you just want to change colors when the pattern notes to change yarn. I like to use the seamless color change method for my projects.
So now that we've covered the stitches and how the stitch pattern comes together, let's talk about the yarn that is used for this pattern, and then you're good to go!

The Yarn You'll Use For The Willow Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern
For this crochet striped baby blanket pattern, I used Hobby Lobby's Yarn Bee Bamboo-tiful Yarn in three different colors (blue, beige, and white). It's a really soft lightweight DK yarn that is made from cotton and bamboo.
I highly recommend it for this project as the pattern is for a baby and the yarn really brings out the stitches.
However, if you can't get a hold of this yarn or it's not available in your country, a fantastic substitute is Lion Brand Coboo yarn.
It's very similar (almost identical in my opinion) and is also made from cotton and bamboo. If you were to use another yarn, I would recommend sticking to a cotton base yarn and making a gauge swatch.
You might have to go up one hook size or possibly down one hook size. So definitely double check and make a gauge swatch if you're going to use a different yarn.

Materials
- 2 skeins of Hobby Lobby’s Yarn Bee Bamboo-Tiful in the color White (Weight 3/ 4oz, 257yds), a total of 514 yards or you can use another lightweight category number 3 yarn.
- 2 skeins of Hobby Lobby’s Yarn Bee Bamboo-Tiful in the color Cerulean Sea (Weight 3/ 4oz, 257yds), a total of 514 yards or you can use another lightweight category number 3 yarn.
- 1 skeins of Hobby Lobby’s Yarn Bee Bamboo-Tiful in the color Linen (Weight 3/ 4oz, 257yds), a total of 257 yards or you can use another lightweight category number 3 yarn.
- 4.0 (G) mm Crochet Hook.
- Darning Needle.
- Scissors.
Gauge:
6 sequences (2dc, 2ch, sc) x 12 rows = 4" inch square
Note - gauge can be tricky to measure with this stitch pattern. So I measured my 4 inch square by measuring 1 sequence (2 dc, 2 ch, 1) as 1 stitch. I had a total of 6 sequences (6 stitches) per 4" inches and a total of 12 rows per 4'' inches.
Abbreviations:
- ch – chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook.
- sc – single crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
- dc – double crochet: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch and pull through, yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
- sp – space.
Size:
28" inches x 38" inches.
How to Change the Size of This Blanket: The stitch pattern used in the blanket is made by a multiple of 4. In order to change the size, all you have to do is adjust the foundation chain by a multiple of 4.
Decrease the foundation chain to make a smaller blanker, and increase the foundation chain to make a bigger blanket. Then follow the pattern as is by starting with row 1.
Pattern Notes:
- Pattern written in U.S Terms.
- Turning chain (chain 2) does not count as a stitch.
- Pattern notes when to switch colors, A = Hobby Lobby’s Bamboo-Tiful yarn in the color White, B = Hobby Lobby’s Bamboo-Tiful yarn in the color Cerulean Sea, and C = Hobby Lobby’s Cotton DK yarn in the color Linen.
- At the end of the pattern, you’ll find instructions on how to make your foundation chain look like the other 3 sides of the blanket (this part is optional).
- Due to the nature of the stitch pattern, I recommend working your foundation chain loosely. This will help prevent your blanket from curving.

Finish off your work and weave in any remaining ends.
Optional Border for the Foundation Chain
If you would like to have the foundation row look the same as the other three sides (wavy scalloped edge), follow the next set of instructions.
Reattach the yarn that you used for the blanket to the first chain you made (foundation row).

Then chain 2 (counts as 1 dc), and make a dc, ch 2, and sc all within the chain space.

Then skip 3 chains, and continue to make (2 dc, 2 ch, and 1 sc) in each chain space across the row.

Finally, tie a knot when finished and work in your remaining end.

You're finished!
I hope you enjoyed making the Coastal Baby Crochet Blanket Pattern.
