Free Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern
There is something so special about a handmade crochet baby blanket. Whether you're creating a cozy blanket for your little one or gifting it to a mom-to-be, it's sure to be a treasured keepsake for years to come.
The Willow Crochet Baby Blanket is an easy beginner-level crochet pattern that uses a one-row repeat and is made with a DK weight yarn. If you're familiar with your basic crochet stitches (chain, single crochet, and double crochet) you can make this beautiful simple pattern.

It really is one of those projects where you can just sit back and stitch away without having to count your stitches. I have used this stitch pattern for other crochet blankets, and it continues to be one of my go-to stitch patterns.
I love the look of the stitches, and I love how it's so easy to make. So I highly recommend this project if you're looking for something simple yet looks very intricate and pretty! If you would like to see some more patterns that use this stitch, then click the links down below:
So let's dive a little deeper into the stitches you'll use and the yarn that you'll be using for this pattern.

The Stitches That You’ll Use for This Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern
The Willow Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern is made using three basic stitches. You'll start this pattern by first making your foundation chain, then you'll start working your first row of chains, single crochets, and double crochets.
So these are the three stitches that you'll need to know for the pattern. Down below, you'll find a quick overview of how to work these stitches.
Stitches
- ch – chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook.
- sc – single crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
- dc – double crochet: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch and pull through, yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
Once you've made your first row and second row, the pattern becomes very simple because you're just going to repeat row 2. So you're going to be repeating the same sequence of making two double crochets, two chains, and one single crochet throughout the pattern.
Now there is a video tutorial included with this pattern, so if you need a little bit of help, the video will explain how to make the rows step-by-step.
So now that we've covered the stitches and how the stitch pattern comes together, let's talk about the yarn that is used for this pattern, and then you're good to go!

The Yarn You’ll Use For The Willow Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern
For this crochet baby blanket pattern, I used Hobby Lobby's Yarn Bee Bamboo-tiful Yarn. It's a really soft lightweight DK yarn that is made from cotton and bamboo.
I highly recommend it for this project as the pattern is for a baby and the yarn really brings out the stitches. However, if you can't get a hold of this yarn or it's not available in your country, a fantastic substitute is Lion Brand Coboo yarn.
It's very similar (almost identical in my opinion) and is also made from cotton and bamboo. If you were to another yarn, I would recommend sticking to a cotton base yarn and making a gauge swatch.
This way you can see if you need to go up or down a hook size as we all crochet differently and all yarns are different.
Ok, let's get started with our pattern!

- Size 4.0 (G) mm Crochet Hook.
- Darning Needle.
- Scissors.
Note - A great yarn substitution for this baby blanket is Lion Brand Coboo Yarn.
Gauge:
16 stitches x 8 rows = 4"inch square in double crochet.
Abbreviations:
- ch – chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook.
- sc – single crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
- dc – double crochet: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch and pull through, yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
- sp – space
Size:
30" x 30"inches.
How to Change the Size of This Blanket: The stitch pattern used in the blanket is made by a multiple of 4. In order to change the size, all you have to do is adjust the foundation chain by a multiple of 4.
Decrease the foundation chain to make a smaller blanker, and increase the foundation chain to make a bigger blanket. Then follow the pattern as is by starting with row 1.
Pattern Notes:
- Pattern written in U.S Terms.
- Turning chain (chain 2) does not count as a stitch.
- Due to the nature of the stitch pattern, I recommend working your foundation chain loosely. This will help prevent your blanket from curving.
- At the end of the pattern, you’ll find instructions on how to make your foundation chain look like the other 3 sides of the blanket (this part is optional).
- Total stitches for row are indicated between ( ). Note - your stitches will increase after making your foundation chain because you're adding stitches to the first row.

With the color Linen, chain 148.
Row 1: Make a dc in the 3rd ch from the hook, ch 2, sc in the next ch. *skip 2 ch, 2 dc in the next ch, ch 2, sc in the following ch. Repeat from * across row, turn. (185)

Row 2: ch 2, skip the first stitch, make (2 dc, 2 ch, and 1 sc in the chain space). *skip next 3 stitches and make (2 dc, 2 ch, and 1 sc in the chain space). Repeat from * across row, turn. (185)

Row 3 – Row 81: Repeat row 2.
Finish off your work and weave in any remaining ends.
Optional Border for the Foundation Chain
If you would like to have the foundation row look the same as the other three sides (wavy scalloped edge), follow the next set of instructions.
Reattach the yarn that you used for the blanket to the first chain you made (foundation row).

Then chain 2 (counts as 1 dc), and make a dc, ch 2, and sc all within the chain space.

Then skip 3 chains, and continue to make (2 dc, 2 ch, and 1 sc) in each chain space across the row.

Finally, tie a knot when finished and work in your remaining end.

You're finished!
I hope you enjoyed making the Willow Baby Crochet Blanket Pattern.

I’m making this using hobby lobby yarn bee simply flawless and a G hook. Mine seems to be holier than your. Suggestions?

Hi there, I would try using a smaller hook size. That should make the stitches closer together and look less holier.

I made the blanket and I love the pattern. I used the same yarn and a G hook. My finished blanket is 2-3 inches wider at the bottom. It looks like my stitches may have gotten tighter as I went along. Any suggestions?

Hi there, I'm thinking your tension got a bit tighter later into the project. This is totally normal and can definitely happen once in while. I would recommend blocking your blanket to even out the stitches.

Hi. Beautiful pattern. Question does your description of a single crochet stitch in the pattern match what you are doing as a single crochet stitch in the video… maybe I’m just not understanding the written sc instructions. I don’t see you yarn over twice in the video on sc? Thanks for helping me understand.
