Do you have some yarn lying around and need to twist it back into a hank? If that answer is a yes, you’ve come to the right blog post. Today, I’m going to show how to wind your yarn back into a hank.
Whether you’re organizing your yarn or are in need of some mini hanks for a project, this tutorial will show you step-by-step how to make mini hanks of yarn.
Even though this tutorial is geared towards making mini hanks of yarn, you can use the same process to create regular-sized hanks.
Here are some of the things you’re going to need for this tutorial.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- A blocking mat (these are the ones that I used).
- Blocking Mat Pins.
- Worsted-Weight yarn (you can use another yarn weight).
- A precut strand of yarn (about 6″ inches).
- A pair of scissors (like these cute ones from WeCrochet).

Step-by-Step Mini Hank Tutorial
Step 1: Grab 1 blocking mat and place two pins 6 inches apart from each other.
Step 2: Then grab your yarn and carefully wind your yarn around the two pins 13 times or until you’ve reached the end of your yarn.
Step 3: Take the 2 tail-ends and tie a knot.
Step 5: Then pull your yarn carefully off the pins and hold the ends of the yarn. Then place one end of the yarn onto your finger on the right side, and then place the other yarn end on one finger on the left side.
Step 6: Then twist the yarn using your one finger on the right side.
Step 7: Once you have a tight twist, push the two sides together (this should happen naturally), and then pull the right side over the left side. You should now have a yarn hank.
Step 8: Then take your darning needle with the extra strand of yarn and insert it through the top of the yarn hank and pull through.
Remove your darning needle and tie a knot with the yarn strand at the top of the mini yarn hank and then tie one more knot at the top of the yarn strand.
Step 9: Trim the two ends of the knot you created in step 3.
You’re finished! I hope you enjoyed making this mini yarn hank.
If you made a few to many of these mini yarn hanks like me, you can always use them as a cute key chain or you can glue them to cards. Or you could always make some stitch markers.
So there’s lots of fun ways to use these mini yarn hanks!
