If you’ve been wanting to make a matching crochet pillow and blanket, this pattern is for you! The Haven Crochet Pillow is soft, chunky, and matches the Haven Blanket perfectly.

The Haven Pillow Pattern uses the same stitch design, yarn, and hook size as the blanket version. So if you’ve already made the blanket, or just looking for a matching crochet set, definitely give this duo a try.

It’s made using one of my favorite stitches, and one of my go to bulky-weight yarns. The stitch pattern is made using an easy one-row repeat, so all you need to know is chain, single crochet, and double crochet. And then the yarn used in the pattern is Lion Brand Hue + Me yarn.

How to Make This Easy Crochet Pillow

You’ll start this pattern by crocheting one panel, and then you will sew that panel onto a fabric cover to create your pillow.

Alternatively, you could always crochet two panels, and then seam them together using the whip stitch method. The pattern down below will include notes and yardage information for both options.

So I say do what you like best, as crochet is all about having fun and playing around with yarn (+ making cool things)!

Stitches

For this crochet pillow pattern, all you need to know is how to make a chain, single crochet, and double crochet.

Down below, you’ll find a quick explanation of how to make these stitches. If you’re more of a visual learner or want to see it in real-time, then check out the video tutorial for this pattern (in the notes section).

Stitches Used:

  • ch – chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook.
  • sc – single crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
  • dc – double crochet: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch and pull through, yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.

The Yarn You’ll Use For This Crochet Pattern

For this chunky crochet pillow pattern, I used one of my go to yarns, which is Lion Brand Hue + Me yarn.

Lion Brand Hue + Me yarn is a number 5 bulky-weight yarn that’s made from acrylic and wool. It’s a soft, warm, textured yarn that works up beautifully.

It also comes in lots of different colors, so you can choose whatever color you like. I highly recommend this yarn for this project, but you could always use a different bulky-weight yarn. Just make sure that you make a gauge swatch, as there can be slight differences.

Make 1 panel if you’re sewing it onto a pillow cover.

Make 2 panels if you’re not using a pillow cover.

With the color Salt, chain 48 (56).

Row 1: Make a dc in the 3rd ch from the hook, ch 2, sc in the next ch. *skip 2 ch, 2 dc in the next ch, ch 2, sc in the following ch. Repeat from * across row, turn. 62 (72).

A swatch that shows row 1 of the Reverse Blanket Stitch.

Row 2: ch 2, skip the first stitch, make (2 dc, 2 ch, and 1 sc in the chain space). *skip next 3 stitches and make (2 dc, 2 ch, and 1 sc in the chain space). Repeat from * across row, turn. 62 (72).

Now follow the pattern according to the size you’re making.

Small Size (18″ x 18″ inch):

Row 3 – Row 23: Repeat row 2.

Large Size (20″ x 20″ inch):

Row 3 – Row 25: Repeat row 2.

Finish off your work and weave in any remaining ends. Now you will reattach your yarn to the foundation chain on the right side to make your foundation chain look like the other 3 sides of your panel.

Start by reattaching your yarn to the first chain you made on the right side of your panel.

Reattaching yarn to the foundation chain.

Then chain 2 (counts as 1 dc), and make a dc, ch 2, and sc all within the chain space.

Then skip 3 chains, and continue to make (2 dc, 2 ch, and 1 sc) in each chain space across the row.

Finally, tie a knot when finished and work in your remaining end.

Now follow the next set of directions for either sewing your pillow onto a pillow cover or seaming your two panels together.

Sewing Your Pillow Onto a Pillow Cover

If you’re sewing your panel onto a pillow cover, follow the next set of directions.

Step 1: Lay your pillow cover down first and put your crochet panel on top.

Step 2: Grab your needle + thread and starting from the corner of your pillow, insert your needle through both fabrics. Weaving in and out between both fabrics.

Note: The scalloped edges on your panel will peak through the top of the fabric. This is because the panels edges are not straight, but scalloped. So you will be sewing in the middle of the stitches.

Step 3: Work your way around all 4 sides, making sure to stay on the edge of the pillow cover.

Step 4: Tie a knot when finished, and weave in you remaining thread end.

Step 5: Grab your pillow and insert it into your new pillow cover.

You’re finished!

Seaming Your Two Panels Together Using the Whip-Stitch Method

If you’re seaming your two panels together to form your pillow cover, follow the next set of directions.

Step 1: Lay one panel down first, and then lay the other panel on top (make sure you have the back sides facing each other).

Step 2: Reattach your yarn to the panel on the back and then use your darning needle to whipstitch three of the four sides together. Alternatively, you can also use the slip stitch method to seam the sides together.

Note: When you’re seaming it together, make sure to insert your hook in to the top of every stitch. Your following the edges of the scallops. This also produces a prettier seam in the end.

Step 3: Once you have the three sides seamed together, grab your pillow and insert your pillow in between the panels. Now seam together the remaining side to create your pillow.

You’re finished! I hope you enjoyed making this crochet pillow.
