First things first, if you need a quick overview of how to make a sunburst granny square, make sure to click this link here. This post goes into detail on everything you need to know to make this granny square.

So it’s perfect for those of us who need a quick refresher! I’ve also included step-by-step photos and a guided video tutorial within the post.

Alright, so for this tutorial all be showing how to make a color change two different ways. The first method all be showing is how to add a new color of yarn using the seamless slipstitch method.

With the seamless slip stitch method, you’ll work your last stitch, and then when you go to join your round with a slip stitch, that’s when you’ll introduce the new color. So you will be making an uncompleted slip stitch with your first color, and then you’ll finish your slip stitch by adding in your second color.

This gives a nice seamless look and you can hardly tell that you added in a new color. It’s one of my favorite methods to use!

For the second method, you’ll finish off your work after you’ve joined the round, work in your ends, and then you’ll add your new color by working in a new stitch. This is also a great way to change colors and it looks seamless too.

So I would recommend trying out both ways and seeing which way you like best. Let’s get started!

Sunburst Granny Square Color Changing Technique: Method 1

The first color changing technique explained down below is the seamless stitch method.

Step 1: Work your slip stitch to join your round, but do not complete the last part of your stitch.

So work it as follows: insert your hook into the second chain, yarn over, and pull through.

Step 2: Then grab your second color, and drape it over the hook. The working yarn of your second color is on the left side, and the tail end is on the right side.

Step 3: Then carefully finish your slip stitch by pulling your second color through both loops on the hook.

Step 3: Then chain 2, and continue working your first stitch for the round.

The second round the granny square is being made using a different color yarn.

You’re finished! Here is the second method you can use to make a color change.

Sunburst Granny Square Color Changing Technique: Method 2

The second method is done by adding a new piece of yarn. So you’ll finish your round that you’re on by joining the round, and then you’ll work in your ends.

Then you will add your new color to a different stitch. So you are not going to add it to the stitch were you joined your work.

This method goes as follows:

Step 1: Insert your hook into any one of the stitches, then drape the second color of your hook, so your working yarn is on the left, and your tail end is on the right.

Step 2: Then carefully pull though your stitch, then take the tail end and move it over the working yarn to the left, and chain 2 to start your next round.

So now you should have your new color added and you’re ready to work your following round.

And that’s all there is to changing colors. Now if you need a little bit more help or you would just like to see the video tutorial, it’ll be linked down below.
