Free Chunky Crochet Throw Blanket Pattern

My latest free crochet pattern is a super cozy chunky crochet blanket. It’s an easy blanket pattern that’s made up of only 2 stitches. All you need to know is single crochet and double crochet, that’s it!

So if you’re in the mood for something that’s not too complicated and works up pretty quickly, I think you’ll enjoy this pattern.

It’s made with Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick Yarn and this yarn is great to work with. It has amazing stitch definition and for a bulky yarn, it’s really soft.

It’s similar to Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn, just a tad bit thinner and this one is made out of recycled polyester. So if you haven’t tried it, definitely do!

A Perfect Throw for The Home

One thing that I love about this crochet throw blanket is that it would look good in any space. You could drape it over the couch or you can use it as a blanket on the bed. It also works great as a cozy coverup in the mornings.

I personally use this in the mornings when I go out on the porch with my cup of tea and it definitely keeps me warm. I think it would also work great in the warmer months, as it’s not too heavy. So I think you’ll get a lot of use out of it!

How much yarn do I need for a chunky crochet blanket?

For this chunky crochet blanket, you will need 3 balls of Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick Yarn in the color Sepia Rose and 1 ball of Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick Yarn in the color Whipped Cream.

The Sepia Rose color is used for the base of the pattern and the Whipped Cream color is used to make the pom-poms. Alternatively, you could always switch the colors around and do white for the blanket portion and make the pom-poms in the pink color.

There’s also quite a few different colors in this yarn line (18 total), so you can definitely mix and match. Some of my favorite colors are Hazelwood, Night Sky, and Spruce.

How to make a different size crochet blanket?

If you want to make a smaller or larger version of this blanket pattern, all you need to do is adjust the number of chains in the beginning. You also have to take the multiple into account, which is two.

So for a smaller blanket, you want to decrease the number of chains and for a larger blanket, you want to increase the number of chains.

Materials:

• 3 balls of Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick Yarn in the color Sepia Rose (Weight 6 / 12 oz, 223 yards), a total of 669 yards or another super bulky weight category 6 yarn.
• 1 ball of Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick Yarn in the color Whipped Cream (Weight 6 / 12 oz, 223 yards), a total of 223 yards or another super bulky weight category 6 yarn.
• 15 mm crochet hook (Size Q).
• Pom-pom maker (large size 3-3/8in, 85mm).
• Tape measure.
• Darning needle.
• Scissors.
• Stitch marker (optional).

Gauge:

8 stitches x 6 rows = 4” inch square in Suzette Stitch.

Abbreviations:

ch – chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook.

sc – single crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.

dc – double crochet: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch and pull through, yarn over and pull through first two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.

Size of Blanket:

42” inches x 42” inches.

Pattern Notes:

• Pattern written in U.S Terms.
• Ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
• You will first crochet the blanket and then add the pom-poms. The pom-poms are made by hand using a pom-pom maker. You can find a detailed tutorial of how to use a pom pom maker by clicking here. If you don’t have a pom-pom maker, you can also make one with your hand, or use the cardboard method.
• 8 pom-poms are made with Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick yarn in the color Whipped Cream. You will add 4 pom-poms to each side. 

Pattern

With Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick color Sepia Rose, chain 56.

Row 1: In second ch from hook, (1sc,1dc) in same chain. Skip next ch, *(1sc,1dc) in next ch, skip 1 ch. Repeat from * till last two ch. skip next ch, sc in last ch. Turn. (55)

Row 2: ch 1 , (1sc, 1dc) in first stitch , skip 1 st. *(1sc,1dc) in next st, skip 1 st. Repeat from * till last two st. skip next st, sc in last st. Turn. (55)

Row 3 – Row 55: Repeat row 2.

Break yarn and weave in all ends.

How to Attach a Pom-Pom to Your Crochet Blanket

You will now add the pom-poms to your crochet blanket.

Start by making a total of 8 pom-poms using Lion Brand Re-Spun Thick & Quick in the color Whipped Cream with either a pom-pom maker, your hand, or the cardboard method. Make sure to not cut off the tail ends that are used to close the pom-pom together.

Once you have all your pom-poms made, lay your blanket flat out and grab your darning needle. Insert the darning needle through one of the tail ends of the pom-pom and through the first right stitch on the corner of your blanket. 

Grab your other pom-pom tail end and tie 3 knots with the tail end you just inserted through the corner right stitch. 

Cut your tail ends once the pom pom is secure and grab your tape measure. You want to evenly space the other 3 pom-poms along the edge of the blanket (4 per side). You want to measure 10 ½” inches between each pom pom. 

Side note: you can always add more or less pom-poms to the blanket. It’s totally up to you. 

Once you’ve added all pom-poms to one side, repeat the process for the other side.
