LEARN HOW TO MAKE A BEGINNER FRIENDLY CROCHET BRAIDED COZY FOR YOUR FAVORITE CUP.
Crochet cup cozy’s are my favorite thing to make all year long, because their simple and easy to make. Today, I will be showing you how to make another crochet cup cozy as part of this weeks series.
If you haven’t checked out the first crochet cup cozy, you can do so HERE. It’s a great beginner friendly cozy using only one simple stitch!
CROCHET COZY INSPIRATION
The design inspiration for this cozy came from wanting to make something simple, yet cute for my favorite mug. I also wanted to incorporate some sort of crochet braid.
I don’t know about you, but I love making cute cozy’s for my favorite cups and mugs. Plus, I love giving these as gifts during the holidays.
You can even add cute little tags to the back of the cozy’s! check out the photo below for the “Made with love” tag.

I found my tags at my local craft store. But i’ve also seen them on sites like Etsy and Amazon.
YARN CHOICE
So when it came down to picking the yarn for this crochet cup cozy. I ended up choosing Hobby Lobby’s Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek in the color Pumpkin Spice.
This yarn is great to work with because your hook glides right thought the stitches and the yarn has a pretty sheen to it.
So let’s get into the pattern!
BRAIDED CROCHET CUP COZY PATTERN
Supplies Needed:
- Medium weight yarn (category “4”, I used 1 ball of Hobby Lobby’s Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek in the color Pumpkin Spice).
- 5 mm hook (U.S./H), or hook needed to obtain gauge
- Tapestry needle
Gauge:
Since this is a crochet cup cozy, the gauge is not needed for this project.
Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
Notes:
- Pattern written in US terms.
- Beginner friendly crochet pattern.
- This crochet cup cozy is a snug fit. You can always increase and decrease the amount of stitches if you want to make it bigger or smaller.
Pattern:
PART 1: MAKE 3
ch 33
Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook, hdc across (32)
Row 2: ch 1, hdc across (32)
Row 3: Repeat row 2
Finish off and weave in ends.
PART 2: CREATE BRAID
So at this point, you should have 3 long rectangle strips. These will be used to create the braid.
But first we need to overlap each strip and slip stitch it together.

Take each strip and lay them over each other, as shown above. Then sl st across starting from right to left. When at the end of the row, ch 1 and sc across 11 times. Do this one more time.
Pattern is as follows
sl st across top border so all pieces are connected and secure (11)
Row 1: ch 1, sc across (11)
Row 2: repeat row 1
Once this is done, cut string and repeat on the other side.

Finally, slip stitch the two pieces together and weave in all ends. At this point, you can always add a cute tag to your braided cup cozy!
I hope you had fun making this tutorial.
Happy Hooking!
