Chunky Crochet Scarf

My latest design and free crochet pattern on the blog is this easy 2-hour chunky crochet scarf. It’s a beginner-friendly crochet scarf that’s made using only 2 crochet stitches.

One of the stitches that you’ll be using for this scarf is half double crochet and the other stitch is half double crochet in the back loop. I love using this stitch to make scarves because it gives a beautiful ribbed knit-like crochet effect.

This crochet stitch also works up very fast, so if you need a quick crochet project this would be the perfect pattern!

Bulky Weight Yarn Makes the Perfect Chunky Crochet Scarf

One thing that I love about this crochet scarf is that it’s made using a super bulky weight yarn. Not only does this make the scarf warm, but it also allows this pattern to be worked up quickly.

It’s also the perfect yarn to work with for beginners! Have you tried Lion Brand Thick & Quick Yarn?

The Yarn You’ll Need for This Chunky Crochet Scarf

For this simple crochet scarf pattern, you will need 3 balls of Lion Brand Thick & Quick yarn in the color Fisherman. It’s a super bulky number 6 yarn that’s made from an acrylic wool base.

Lion Brand Quick & Thick is one of my favorite yarns to use for crochet projects because the yarn works up so beautifully. It’s also really soft and affordable!

Another thing that I love about this yarn is that it comes in a variety of different colors, 79 options total. My favorite colors are Fisherman, Peanut, and Grey Marble. What colors are your favorite?

Chunky Crochet Scarf Pattern

Row 2: ch 2, turn, hdcblo in first stitch and across till end of row (115).

Row 3 – Row 10: Repeat row 2

Row 11: ch 2, turn, hdc in first stitch and across till end of row.

Part 2: How to Make and Add Tassels to a Scarf

You will need to make a total of 22 tassels, 11 tassels per side (you can always add less or more for your scarf). Find a step-by-step video tutorial: how to add tassels to your scarf here or follow the written instructions down below.

You will need a medium size book, a pair of scissors, and your left over yarn from your scarf.

Step 1: With your book in hand, wrap your yarn 5 times around the book.

Step 2: Cut your yarn at the bottom and take it off the book.

Step 3: Insert your crochet hook at the bottom of your scarf. Grab the yarn and insert it through the bottom loop with the crochet hook.

Step 4: Use your fingers to insert the end of the string into the loop and pull through. Now you have a tassel!

Step 5: Cut an additional piece of yarn(the size of your tassel) and tie it in the middle of the tassel twice.

Step 6: Trim ends, and repeat steps 1-5 for the remaining tassels.

Voila, you’re done!

I hope you enjoyed making your chunky crochet scarf.

Hello, i was wondering if i could use a bulky 5 yarn with a 9mm hook? Would i follow the same pattern or should i add?

Thursday 4th of January 2024

Hi there, I think it could definitely work. You could always make a gauge swatch to see if you need to go up or down a hook size.

I love this scarf! I started to make it (I'm a beginner) and mine looks a bit flat compared to your pictures... Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?

Monday 16th of January 2023

Hi there, thank you so much! To answer your question, I'm thinking it might be your yarn. Are you using the same yarn in the pattern? If you are, I would try going down a hook size. This will help with the stitches being closer and will look less flat. 😊

Hey! I was wondering how to do a 2 color scarf, would it work well to just swap colors every row?

Tuesday 3rd of January 2023

Hi there, that sounds like a great idea! I would switch every other row. So when you make your last stitch of the row, switch colors when you complete the stitch. For example, when you're making a half double crochet, work the first part of the stitch in the first color, then grab your second color and wrap it around your hook, and pull through the loop in that color to complete the stitch. 😊

Love this scarf and can't wait to make it. Does the 3 skeins of yarn include the very cute tassels?

Monday 19th of December 2022

Hi there, thank you so much! Yes, you should have leftover yarn from your scarf to make all the tassels. I hope you enjoy making it! 😊

Saturday 17th of December 2022

It looks pretty long in the photo and that's what I'm looking for. What is the length of the final product without the tassels?

Monday 19th of December 2022

Hi there, the final length of the scarf is 79" inches and the length of the tassel is 7" inches.
