Easy Crochet Round Placemat
The inspiration behind these simple placemats came from me making crochet coasters. I thought it would be so cute to make a matching set for my dining room table.
I’m always switching out my placemats or washing them, so making a crochet placemat seemed like a really good idea.
This crochet placemat pattern is a small to medium size and you’re going to need about 109 yards of yarn. For a bigger crochet placemat, you are going to need about 150 yards of yarn. This could vary though depending on how big you want your crochet placemat to be.
Crochet round placemats for everyday use
One thing that I love about this crochet placemat pattern is that its perfect for everyday use. You can even make a special set for the holidays too! All you have to do is switch up the colors.
Another thing that I love about this placemat is that its made in the spiral. So instead of finishing each round with a slip stitch, you continue by working in the following round.
Reverse Single Crochet Border – Crab Stitch
The beautiful rope like border on this easy crochet round placemat is made using reverse single crochet. Reverse single crochet is made by creating single crochets backwards. It sounds kind of confusing, but it’s totally not.
One way to understand this method is to look at it this way: Normally when you crochet you want to turn your work after every round. However for reverse single crochet you don’t. The stitch stays exactly the same way, it’s the yarn over part that can be a little tricky.
When your yarning over, you have to make sure your yarn goes through the loop the right way. Once you’ve mastered the loop part, you’ll be a pro at it!
And now for a little close up of the reverse single crochet border, which is also known as the crab stitch.
Yarn Choice + Substitution
For this project, I chose to work with a lightweight number 3 linen yarn. However, you could substitute a worsted weight yarn for this pattern, like Lion Brands 24/7 Mercerized Cotton.
It’s the same yarn I used for my modern crochet potholders and it’s always my go to yarn if I don’t have linen yarn. The linen yarn that I used for this placemat pattern is by a yarn company called Ganxxet.
They offer a variety of different yarns and their linen yarn collection is the best! Two of my favorite colors in the yarn line are soft pink, and deep red.
Cotton yarn is the best for crochet placemats
Any yarn will work for this project, but I highly recommend using a natural fiber yarn, like linen or cotton. Plus, cotton yarn is durable and easy to clean.
Some of my favorite cotton yarns to use for crochet home decor patterns are:
- Lion Brand 24/7 Mercerized Cotton Yarn
- Lily Sugar N’ Cream Collection
- Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton Yarn
- We Crochet Dishie Yarn
