Free Crochet Potholder Pattern
My latest free pattern is the Magic Crochet Potholder – an easy home-decor hot pad pattern that comes together like magic! Like my other double-thick crochet potholder pattern, you start by making a basic foundation row. Then you continue by working a series of rows in the round, and then you seam it all together.
It’s a fast and easy project that’s perfect for anyone looking to make some hot pads for their kitchen. Plus, with its 3 size options, you’re sure to use these for other things in your home (the small size makes the cutest coaster)!
Inspiration
The inspiration for this pattern came from my need for some potholders in the kitchen. The construction isn’t original as there are many different versions of the magic potholder but I figured I would add a twist and give them some texture.
I also added a loop for easy hanging and it has 3 different size options. So you can choose to make whatever size you like without having to figure out the chain amount.
I also thought while making these that they would make the cutest gift! You can make all three of them, stack them on top of each other, and add some wooden utensils. Maybe even a cookbook if the person is really into cooking!
So if you’re like me and really need some new potholders, or simply want to make something with leftover yarn, I hope you really enjoy making this pattern.
Once you have the foundation row done, as well as the first row, you won’t even need to look at the pattern, you just have to work in the round until it closes.
Alright, let’s take a look at the yarn you’ll be using for this potholder pattern.
Yarn
These magic crochet potholders are made with WeCrochet Dishie yarn – one of my favorite yarns for home decor! It’s a 100% cotton yarn that’s super soft and durable. It also comes in a variety of different colors. Linen and Swan are two of my favorites!
I absolutely loved using this yarn for this pattern, and highly recommend it, but any worsted-weight yarn will do! Just make sure that it’s a worsted-weight cotton yarn. If you choose to work with an acrylic-based yarn, your yarn might actually melt when something hot is placed on it.
So definitely stick to cotton yarn when making crochet potholders.

Materials:
Yarn – WeCrochet Dishie in the color Linen and Swan (Weight 4/100 grams, 190 yards). You can also use another worsted weight cotton yarn.
Sizes:
Small – You will need 42 yards for the color Linen and 4 yards for the color Swan.
Medium – You will need 82 yards for the color Linen and 8 yards for the color Swan.
Large – You will need 113 yards for the color Linen and 12 yards for the color Swan.
Darning Needle.
Scissors.
Gauge:
20 half double crochet stitches x 18 rows = 4″ inch square.
Abbreviations:
ch – chain: Yarn over, pull through loop on hook.
ss – slip stitch: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, pull through stitch, and loop on hook.
sc – single crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook.
hdc – half double crochet: Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch. Yarn over one more time and pull through last three loops on hook.
Size of Potholder:
Small: 4″ x 4″ inches.
Medium: 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ inches.
Large: 6 3/4″‘ x 6 3/4″ inches.
Pattern Notes:
- Pattern written in U.S Terms.
- This crochet potholder can be made in 3 sizes: small, medium, and large. The sizing guide follows S( M,L). Example: ch 30 (42, 51) means chain 30 for the small size, chain 42 for the medium size, and chain 51 for the large size.
- This crochet potholder pattern is made in continuous rounds.
- Total stitches for row are indicated between ( ).
Free Crochet Magic Potholder Pattern
With color Linen, Chain 30 (42, 51).
Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook, make a hdc. Then make a hdc in the next ch and across until your last ch. In the last ch, make 2 hdc.
Now rotate your chain so you’re working on the bottom side of your chain, and make a hdc in each ch until your very last ch. Work 2 hdc in your last ch, and ss to the first hdc. 60 (84, 102).
Now you’re going to work in the round. Continue by following the next set of instructions for the size you’re making. (You do not need to join the work at the end of the round at this point because you’re going to work continuous rounds).
Size Small:
Start by making a hdc in the next stitch, and then make a ss in the following stitch. Continue to alternate between these two stitches until you have 12 rounds total. (60)
Once you have 12 rounds, cut your yarn, and finish your work. Work in any remaining tail ends. Now continue by following the instructions for how to finish your potholder.
Size Medium:
Start by making a hdc in the next stitch, and then make a ss in the following stitch. Continue to alternate between these two stitches until you have 18 rounds total. (84)
Once you have 18 rounds, cut your yarn, and finish your work. Work in any remaining tail ends. Now continue by following the instructions for how to finish your potholder.
Size Large:
Start by making a hdc in the next stitch, and then make a ss in the following stitch. Continue to alternate between these two stitches until you have 21 rounds total. (102)
Once you have 21 rounds, cut your yarn, and finish your work. Work in any remaining tail ends. Now continue by following the instructions for how to finish your potholder.
How to Finish the Potholder (All Sizes).
You’re now going to finish your potholder by slip stitching the two sides together and adding a loop. This part is done in the second color, however, you could always use the same color that you used to make the base of the pattern.
Start by reattaching your second color to your potholder. You want to first make a slip knot, and add your hook to the loop of your slip knot. Then insert your hook with the slip knot into one of the stitches on the very edge of the potholder.
Yarn over, pull though, and then yarn over and pull through both loops on hook (your yarn should be attached at this point).
Continue by inserting your hook into the top loop again and then the back loop again, and make a ss. Continue to repeat this method until your potholder is completely closed.
Then ch 10 and ss to the last ss you made to close the potholder. Then work 10 sc around the loop and ss again to the last ss.
Cut your yarn, and finish your work.
