Are you looking for different ways to use up left over yarn and need some tips on what to do with it? Well, no worries, today’s tutorial will show you how to use that yarn to make some easy dryer balls.

I recently went through my yarn stash and realized that I have a lot of wool yarn that needs to be used. I bought the wool yarn from my stash ages ago and just never made anything with it. So I was like, ok I really need to make something with this now! Plus, it creates more space in my stash to buy new yarns! haha!

Also, I’ve been looking for more ways to be eco friendly. So I think this is the perfect way to slowly start incorporating more eco friendly products into my life.

Eco Friendly Wool Yarn Balls

Creating your own wool yarn balls is a great way to me more eco friendly. Yarn balls eliminate the use for dryer sheets. Plus, you can add you favorite essential oil to the dryer balls to make your clothes smell good. So no need for toxic dryer sheets that take forever to decompose and are bad for the planet.

It’s a win win if you ask me, use up left over wool yarn = wool dryer balls = helping the planet!

How to Make Your Own Dryer Balls

The items that you will need for this tutorial include:

  • Left over wool yarn or you can always buy wool yarn. Lion Brand has a couple different selections of wool yarn. ( Its important to only use wool yarn )
  • Pair of socks
  • Scissor

Create dryer balls in 4 easy steps!

Step 1:

Wrap the yarn around two fingers about 20 times. Remove the yarn and wrap it so it looks like a bow tie.

Step 2:

Keep on wrapping the yarn working clock wise until it forms a ball. You approximately want the size of a baseball. However, you can always make the size that you want. When you have the size you want, cut the yarn and work in the yarn end ( I just tucked it under another piece of yarn).

Step 3:

Grab your sock and stick your yarn ball into it. Make sure it’s pushed to the bottom of the sock. Once this is done, tie a secure knot. I was able to put 2 yarn balls into one sock. If your putting two yarn balls in sock, make sure to tie knots between them.

Step 4:

If you have some laundry to do, now would be the perfect time to do it. Throw the yarn ball socks in the laundry machine a couple of times on high and then in the dryer on high heat. Once this is done, remove them from the socks and you have your very own wool yarn balls!!

Super easy right?! You can literally use these for a thousands of loads.

TIP – Add a bit of lavender essential oil to your dryer balls and your clothes will smell like lavender.
