INSPIRATION + DESIGN
The inspiration for the crochet laptop case came from me needing a new case for my computer. As I was browsing Etsy and other stores online, I wasn’t really seeing anything that I liked.
So I thought “Why not create something cute myself” Something that was easy, yet stylish and pretty!
My thoughts were something like this,
- chunky yarn
- one piece
- easy construction
- can made in under an hour
As you can see from the photo above, I think I came up with the perfect solution. A beautiful blue crochet laptop case made with chunky wool yarn, simple, yet stylish.
Did you notice the cute boho crochet coasters in the photo, its a free pattern here on the blog. They are made using cotton yarn, while working in the spiral.
So back to the crochet laptop cover…. I’m thinking why i’ve never made this before, because its just so easy. Plus, there’s so many different variations you can make. You could go the stripe route or even add some bobbles.
Also, they would make such cute gifts for family and friends! Plus, they whip up super quick! If you know how to single crochet and make a rectangle. You can make this, if not, that’s totally ok too.
I show you how to make this free laptop case crochet pattern down below with step by step photo instructions. Your basically just making a long rectangle, folding it in half, and adding a button.
Bibbidi-bobbidy-boo – you have a crochet laptop case! (I use to love that movie growing up – still do)
The yarn I chose for this project is Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick. It’s a beautiful number 6 bulky yarn made with acrylic and wool. I love using this yarn for different crochet projects.
In fact, I just made a chunky crochet scarf using this yarn.
Some of the things I love about this yarn is how soft it is and how your crochet project can really work up quickly using this yarn.
Plus, it’s pretty affordable for a chunky yarn and comes in a range of colors. The color I used for this project is called Air Force and its just the prettiest blue.
However, any chunky yarn can be used to make the crochet laptop case. I do recommend using Lion Brand Wool-Ease because I love the look and feel of it. But just check your yarn stash and see what you have!
The sizing for this crochet project can be very versatile. I chose to make a standard 13 inch laptop case. For reference, I have a Macbook Air and my laptop case fit perfectly. Not to snug, but also not to loose.
If your laptop is bigger or smaller, here are my recommendations on getting the size you want. Since this crochet pattern is made using only single crochet stitches, there is a lot of adjustments that can be made.
Smaller size laptop – decrease the amount of initial stitches. Possibly go down a hook size.
Bigger size laptop – increase the amount of initial stitches. Possibly go up a hook size.
Remember you will be whipstitching the sides together, so take that into account when making it smaller or bigger. You might have to add an additional stitch.
Alright, so let’s started with the crochet laptop case pattern!
Keep your laptop nice and cozy with this easy laptop case crochet pattern. Make it for yourself or for family and friends, it makes the perfect homemade gift, plus accessory.
10.00 mm hook ( U.S./ size N )
2 Balls of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Yarn in the color Air – Force. A total of 212 yards or any other #6 Super Bulky Yarn.
1 medium to large size button
8 Stitches x 10 rows = 4 inch square
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
A standard 13 inch laptop case.
- Chains at the beginning of each row do not count as a stitch
- the 3 extra ch’s in row 36 will create a loop. This is where your button will go through when sewing the button on the top flap.
- Whipstitch is used to close the laptop case together. If you need help with how to do the whipstitch, check out Youtube for lots of amazing videos on this technique.
R1: In 2nd ch from hook, sc across (20)
R2 – R35 : Repeat row 1
R36: In 2nd ch from hook, *sc in stitch (Repeat from * 9 times), ch 3, skip stitch, sc across till end.
Finish off, and work in ends.
TIP: You can also leave a long tail end and use that to whip stitch the two sides together.
Step 1: Lay your rectangle down on a flat surface and you want to fold 3/4ths of the rectangle. So fold it in half, but make sure that 3 crochet rows are showing (photo below for reference).
** the 3 rows that are showing will act as the “flap/fold over” part of your crochet laptop cover.
Step 2: Once your rectangle is folded, whipstitch the sides together. Making sure to go through both sides carefully.
** the pink arrows on the photo below indicate where you need to whipstitch the sides together.
Step 3: All that’s left to do is to sew your button on the laptop case. You want to sew the button in the middle on the top.
And that’s a it! Now you have yourself a really cute and special crochet laptop case. I really enjoyed making this cover for my laptop and I hope you did too.
Watch out for some more patterns coming on how to make more laptop covers. Possibly even some computer accessories!
